Buxton Helmsley is an activist investment firm built on forensic accounting. We look for public companies where the numbers, the governance, or the oversight have gone wrong, and we push for the fix. Our Expert Advisory Board is a bench of senior executives, directors, and specialists who bring industry depth to that work.
Members work with us in two ways. Every member can work on the fund’s campaigns. Members who want more can also take on paid client work through our advisory practice, which advises boards, management teams, private equity firms, lenders, and litigation counsel.
Fund Campaign Work
Diligence on the operations, regulation, and accounting of companies we are evaluating
Advising during live campaigns on industry, regulatory, and operational questions
Bringing us companies in your field with problems worth pursuing
Consideration as a board nominee where your background fits the company
Client Advisory Work (optional)
Advising boards and special committees, including activist readiness reviews that look at a company the way an activist would
Working with management teams on governance, reporting, and operational issues
Supporting private equity firms and lenders on portfolio companies and credits
Consulting and expert support for litigation counsel
Interim and fractional roles
Members who take on client advisory work do all of their hourly advisory work through the firm, and they can bring their existing clients with them.
Compensation
Pay for this position ranges from $357.50 to $650 per hour, depending on the type of work and the member’s tier. All figures are in U.S. dollars.
Fund campaign work: $453.75 per hour, set out in a separate engagement letter for each campaign and paid by the fund. The firm keeps none of it.
Client advisory work: billed to clients by tier. Current rates are $650 per hour for Advisors, $825 for Senior Advisors, and $1,000 for Principal Advisors, and we expect to raise them as the firm grows. Members keep 55% of fees collected on their hours, or 65% for clients they bring in, which works out to $357.50 to $650 per hour. Members also earn 10% of the fees on other advisers’ hours with clients they bring in, for the first two years. Firm management sets each member’s tier and promotes members as their work warrants.
Board service: directors elected to a company’s board are paid by that company.
Members are paid within 14 days of the firm collecting. All work is by engagement, with no minimum hours.
Who We Are Looking For
At least 15 years of senior experience in your field, as an executive, director, senior adviser, regulator, or technical specialist
Public company board service or significant governance experience (strongly preferred)
Working knowledge of public company finance, SEC reporting, or governance
A professional network you can draw on, and relationships you have kept up
Directness, and comfort with complex situations that move quickly
An advanced degree, certification, or specialized credential (a plus)
We are especially interested in expertise in forensic accounting and audit, restructuring and turnarounds, pharmaceutical regulation, biotech manufacturing, healthcare delivery, energy, financial services, enterprise technology, cybersecurity, real estate, and supply chain. Candidates from other fields are welcome to apply.
